So…a killer flu has been going around*
And it’s awful. It’s claimed the lives of lots of grownups and kids all around the country.
The West Coast (where we are) has been hit particularly hard. So much so that the hospitals are overflowing.
Here are the steps that I take every year to protect my family from illness, plus a few extra precautions for this super flu.
17 tips to survive the Killer Flu

1. Dress Warmly
We dress our kids (and ourselves) warmly for both inside and outside time.
Inside: we make sure we always wear socks and/or slippers during the fall and winter so we keep our internal body temperatures stable. We even wear robes over our jammies during the early morning. And whether we’re in jam-jams or fully dressed, we all make sure to keep our chests and lower necks covered; no V-neck shirts this time of year! Not exposing that upper core/lung-throat area to icy air seems to be pretty important.
2. Keep the house comfortably toasty, but aired out.
I am pretty frugal when it comes to energy usage. But when it’s flu season; I keep the house warm; between 68 and 72 degrees. But I also air the apartment out for a while everyday; leaving a few windows cracked to make the house fresh and to ensure that we don’t have any stagnant air, which feels like a breeding ground for infections. For our family, airing out the house gets fresh air in and germs out!
And warm does not mean WET! We do not want a humid house, but a moderately toasty house.
3. Healthy Smoothies
Choose fruits and vegetables that agree with your system and your own personal biology.
I like to choose fruits/veggies based on the blood type diet; but do what works for you. Ayurvedic, Chinese Medicine, whatevs. Just get some nice ORGANIC fruits and veggies in ya.
4. Super Boost Herbal Smoothies*
I put a bit of fresh tumeric root and fresh ginger in our smoothies during flu season. Like, a dime-sized sliver. It adds a nice, lemony spice to the smoothies, but these roots are antiviral; great for keeping you well.
It’s also been found that tumeric fights depression as well as prozac, so there’s a double bonus.*
5. Drink Water
We drink a cup of water every hour….at the very least. Staying hydrated is an important key to staying healthy.
Make sure you all keep those digits clean, especially after the potty, or after having been outside.
7. Limited Public Outings
I’m really not one to sequester my girls inside; but…this flu is really rampant on the West Coast. So far two kids in the next county over from ours, have died from the flu. So…until this mega flu passes, we’re skipping story time, the library, playdates, and the like.
We also homeschool to avoid the flu.
We homeschool so we can prepare for the apocalypse.
8. Sleep in
There are no alarm clocks for us this week. We are sleeping in (another perk of homeschooling). This gives our bodies ample time to heal from any viruses or germs we might be unknowingly fighting. If you can’t sleep in, go to bed early. Just get in your bed, turn off your phones/tvs/screen/etc, and relax. Grab a book if you need something to occupy yourself with. But try to rest.
9. Lower Stress
Stress makes you susceptible to not only the flu, but a whole host of diseases and illnesses.
So try calming music, not fighting kids or hubs, and just letting things go so you can keep an internal feeling of peace.
10. Get rid of clutter
This goes along with the “no stress” rule. Visual clutter can cause some people a lot of anxiety and stress.
If your house is cluttered or messy and its stressing you out…get a big box, or a big garbage bag, and just put all that crap in it and store it away for when you’re better and you can sort through it. Your immediate surroundings will be nice and clean and stress free. And you might see that you don’t need all that stuff anyway.
Now…if any of your littles are already a bit under the weather… in addition to the things above, you can add:
11. Honey Apple Tea
My solution for little ones who can’t drink tea yet. Basically you put the kettle on for tea, take a mug, fill it a little less than 1/2 way with boiling water, add honey, add organic apple juice.

(Please make sure it’s not too hot; just warm enough for a child)
12. Coughdrop Lollipops.
Perfect for little ones with sore throats. We can’t make it through a cold without them. They are a GODSEND.
13. A spoonful of honey at night for a sore throat
There ya go. After they take the honey, it’s NO TALKING.
If they wake up crying from a sore throat, it’s another spoonful and back to sleep.
14. No blowing the nose
Just wipe. If you blow, the mucus can more easily cause a sinus infection, by becoming lodged in your sinuses.
15. No Dairy
Once I see that anyone has a drippy nose…they go on a dairy free diet. No milk, no butter, no cream, no cheese, no nothing. Dairy thickens mucus; so we stop the all dairy and increase clear fluids until the cold passes.
16. We routinely take vitamins
We also take cod liver oil and other supplements that have hopefully helped build up the girls’ immune systems before they’re hit with something like this.
17. No fast food
It might be obvious, but you definitely want to try to give organic fruits, vegetables, soups, smoothies, all the time and especially when your little ones are sick. Their bodies will use these nutrients to get better, faster.
BONUS: Most importantly, have a positive attitude and speak it in faith. Believe that you will be healthy. Believe that you will stay healthy. And stay positive. The human brain is amazing and so are our bodies and our spirits. What some people call “the placebo effect” others might call a miracle of the human body. Believe you will be healed and healthy, while you adopt healthy practices.
So there ya go! These are the things that we do to prevent under-the-weather-ness or to help it pass quickly if we do catch a bug.
**If your kid IS sick, PLEASE TAKE THEM TO A DOCTOR OR QUALIFIED HEALTH PROFESSIONAL. And stay alert**
