In New England at least, quilted jackets seem to be reserved for the well-heeled, well-educated members of society. Wearing a nicely tailored, slightly fitted, quilted jacket… seems to daintily bring attention to the fact that the wearer is upper class…that they are incredibly well-spoken…and that they are just generally lovely and understatedly cool.
I want a quilted jacket.
I NEED a quilted jacket.
Not because I bounce back and forth between constructed cultural identities or anything….
hee hee hee, I totally don’t….
No, I AM actually ALL of those identities rolled into one…but on different days.
And some days I want to bring out my more New England, Preppy side and a lovely quilted jacket is PERFECT for that! Plus:
1. It’s still just a tiny bit chilly sometimes on some days!
2. If I pick the right cut and color I can also wear the same quilted jacket in the fall!
3. My hip urban jackets are a bit too hip for my current environment…or maybe my style has matured since I last bought a spring jacket…or maybe my jacket has mysteriously shrunk while in my closet…
(closet shrinkage is a real thing; look it up….it’s totally not; I need to workout.)
4. My girls already have matching pink quilted princess jackets; with my eldest having her first when she was barely 2 years old. Can you say elegant and cute! Oh my goodness. Adorbs.
So where will I find my quilted jacket?
Well, the number 1 choice for New England’s upper echelon seems to be Barbour.
Never heard of it? Well neither had I, until last fall.
I plan on trying on a few…their brand seems to focus on quiet luxury and I’m all about quiet AND luxury; Hopefully I will put one on and be instantly transported to my future summer house in Connecticut. Or maybe I will be transported to my own sail boat, coasting the beautiful waves, tossing my luxurious curls over my shoulder, aviators blazing, saying cool and appropriate things like “She sure is yar.”
Choice number 2: Burberry
Iconic. Plaid. English Luxury. Love it.
Choice number 3: Ralph Lauren
American. Elegant. A lifetime of Prep.
I can’t say how much I love Ralph Lauren (even after an unfortunate incident in one of their stores last year, I still love the fashion house, although their employees need training in etiquette). I don’t care for the jacket that is posted in the hyperlink, but it IS a quilted jacket; although I don’t like so much “puff.” But to each, her own.
“Tiana….” I hear you whisper. “What if I’m on a budget? What if I don’t want to invest hundreds of dollars into my wardrobe, let alone in one piece of clothing?” How do I get a nice quilted jacket then?
Well, you could do what I absolutely love to do, and that is: visit the Burberry or Ralph Lauren outlet during a big sale (usually during a season change) armed with an online outlet store coupon, a general outlet coupon, and a store specific outlet coupon and I’d also ask for the student/professor/senior discount. That’s a lot of coupons! But with this strategy, you can rack up some amazing deals.
For instance, My husband and I bought our girls princess quilted jackets that retail for around $125 for…..$28 each! Awesome.
OR you could try hunting sales at:
Nordstroms, Macy’s, Bloomingdales, Saks, Off Saks, or Nordstrom Rack, T.J. Maxx or Marshalls.
(Or if you are uber rich and want to invest in clothing (which does biodegrade rather quickly, unlike diamonds or a healthy diversified portfolio) then by all means, buy garments at full price with my blessing! Hunting for deals can take time or patience and some would rather pay hundreds more for the convenience of just buying what they want, when they want it. Rock on with your bad self and all that jazz. I am not that woman, but if that is you, that is totally ok.)
I like the thrill of the hunt; finding nice things for less and investing my family’s income in other ways. I really try to shop at the outlet versions of our favorite stores, once a year to get a few staples.
OK! Well couponing at the outlets is one of my super shopping secrets, which I may use in the near future to buy an elegant quilted Spring jacket, for less. IF I can snag a few minutes to hunt down my favorite one!
