Have you met Ian & Larissa?
They are a power-couple...of love, dedication, and awesomeness.
In 2006, a year after they'd started dating in college; Ian was working to buy Larissa an engagement ring.
One day on his way to work, Ian's car slammed under an SUV, giving him a traumatic brain injury.
He couldn't talk.
He couldn't walk.
His brain was not responding.
But then, a miracle happened; he started responding.
His then girlfriend Larissa said she knew where he had wanted the relationship to go and that she wanted to marry him still. She loved him.
Watch the video below to hear their story.
This post isn't (directly) about Larissa's amazing love and her tireless dedication. It's not about how the power of her love and their faith in God helped them through an incredibly difficult time and that their Christian faith has inspired millions of people all over the world.
This post is about Ian, who is our Modern Day Knight of the Week!
Ian is a total Boss.
1. Did you know Ian has a job?
Although Ian suffered a traumatic brain injury, where he actually lost a part of his brain and while he has not yet recovered all of his motor skills and he still has trouble feeding himself and communicating, this man STILL has a job. He painstakingly creates art to help support his family and to pay for his physical therapy classes.
Instead of dwelling on physical or mental impairments, Ian CREATED HIS OWN JOB to help support himself and his wife.
Ian = Awesome.
And as a classically trained painter, I'd have to say Ian's paintings are good; his motor skills are improving and more than that his technique is improving as well as his artistic eye.
2. He works INCREDIBLY hard everyday
From the posts on their blog, it seems like Ian is definitely not a quitter. He works diligently, sometimes spending 20 minutes to button his shirt; sometimes taking longer to feed himself. But Ian keeps at it. He could give up, he could ask his sweet "wifey" for help, but instead, he tries.
3. Ian is a dedicated husband
Ian APPRECIATES Larissa. He's loving. He compliments her. He says he's attracted to her. He shares his feelings. He shows his love.
4. Ian has also written a book with his wife Larissa
I'm sure it's tiring to speak and communicate because he has some issues with his vocal chords, but he and Larissa wrote this beautiful book, which I'm hoping my husband will give us for our anniversary (hint hint).
I can't imagine how harrowing it would be to have a traumatic brain injury and how daunting the path of recovery could have looked. But with faith, love, determination, and laughter, Larissa and Ian did it. I have so much respect for Ian and all the work he does. And I know that it is the love and dedication of Larissa that has fed his soul and his faith.
Check out Ian's etsy shop and buy a painting or two. We bought several a few months back. Keep your favorites and see if you can donate the rest to your local brain trauma center, local hospital, local library, local senior's center, etc. Maybe print out their story so they can frame it alongside the painting. (And ask a tax specialist or call your local IRS to see if you can then write off the donation).
If you have time, check out Ian and Larissa's blog, see the progress they've made, and the love that they share as a couple.
Again, congrats to Ian, a modern day knight! Huzzah!
p.s. If you see words, posters, or links in my post, those are things that I've
handpicked and put in my blog especially for you.
They lead to more information and if you like, you can buy what is featured;
it's usually a book, an online movie rental, or a cool product.
