This book series is incredibly charming.
Cynthia Rylant’s power as a living, Master Storyteller really shines through in this series.
Not only that… our children LOVE these books.
Yep…the kids love them.
Ok…the kids DO like them, but my husband and I absolutely LOVE these books!
Because they are SO CUTE!!!!
Her books are really special because while the kids think they’re funny and cute, these books are absolutely charming. It’s like…you can really appreciate them as an adult: the writing is just so apt and illustrative.
And the pacing of the book is natural and lovely.
Because it’s a book for young children, there aren’t many words. But you don’t have that stunted or sparse feeling when reading. The phrases feel full and colorful, like she’s building an entire world with a few short sentences.
As adults we feel nostalgia and a bittersweet longing for childhood, while I expect our kids just giggle at Mr. Putter’s mellow antics.
And the watery, emotion-filled illustrations are off-handedly detailed and pull at your heartstrings.
I’m honestly not doing the series justice. We love it and I can’t wait for her to come out with another volume.

And after you’ve read all of the Mr. Putter and Tabby books, like we have; take solace in the fact that she seems to publish a new one every year.
And that’s definitely something to smile about.
