It took all of 20 seconds for me to think of who to feature for this Music Monday…
and his name is Lecrae.
|Lecrae and his Son|
Some of you may already know of Lecrae, but I came to know him only 2 months ago…when I randomly watched a talk he gave at Liberty University.
From the youtube preview picture I was like…who is this?
He seems sort of …maybe a bit out of place at Liberty…sort of like… an anomaly….
(Clever alert! That’s the name of his latest album!)
I was intrigued, so I watched it. It was very interesting. And here it is, if you’re interested too:
After I watched his lecture, I was like…wow. I want to know more. And I proceeded to find and devour any interview I could read or watch about Lecrae. I shared what I had discovered with my husband and he immediately started watching Lecrae’s interviews with me.
And then we listened to his music.
And it was good! I was surprised because…(and no offense but) I honestly have zero expectations when it comes to today’s mainstream music. I don’t even listen to it anymore. I mean, yes, I’m sure, there is a lot of stuff out there with a good beat, a sick bass, and cool voice effects; but strong voices that don’t need doctoring with studio mojo? Lyrics that actually touch you and make you think? Or at least lyrics that make some sort of sense… (But maybe I’m totally biased and have been turned off by rumors of Anacondas and other craziness. If you know of any good clean, current songs, leave them in the comments below and I’ll check them out. I do need to listen to the latest offerings of John Legend and Jill Scott; any other people putting out good music these days?)
Anyhoo, in a seemingly meaningless sea of musical blah, Lecrae has made some really good music that has heart; For example in one track, he is just talking about his wife and how he is dedicated to her, how amazing she is, and one thing that really stood out to me…he raps about how HE practices MODESTY in his clothing choices to honor her…I was like…am I in an alternate universe?
And here is that video:
And let’s not even get into his other songs (just kidding, let’s), which are super deep and about mistakes, repentance, forgiveness, and some very hard issues. I really respect Lecrae because he even talks about and raps about the fact that he was molested when he was 8 and THAT is something that is very hard for anyone to talk about, and by doing so I know that he has empowered so many people who have gone through similar issues. Here is that video (it’s a fan-made video that has the lyrics):
I’m really glad that I stumbled upon Lecrae. I like his music, I like that he makes me think and that his music actually sounds really good. And I like that he inspires me and my husband, and apparently he inspires many others since he was recently invited to a meeting at the White House.
