Do you remember “Reading Rainbow?”
If you’re anything like me, just seeing that precious rainbow brings on an all-consuming, heart-pumping burst of nostalgia; making you want to tear open your front door and spirit dance to the nearest library, singing belting out “butterflies in the sky” as you leap and bound down the street.
If you’re a child of the 1980s, you totally understand. If not, you are most likely backing away from your computer slowly.
Either way, let me tell you that Reading Rainbow was an AWESOME tv show with host LeVar Burton reading wonderful books and going on interesting educational adventures. I do not remember any of the field trips, but I do remember quite a few of the books. O my goodness, Reading Rainbow, you are so missed.
So today, when the girls asked to watch a show, I thought…”Man, I wish we
could watch ‘Reading Rainbow’ now THAT was a great show!” On a whim I searched for “Reading Rainbow” on
……..and it was there! Not only that, The Classic Collection is absolutely
As I’ve said before, we don’t watch a lot of tv and it can be difficult to find quality shows for our kids. Oh there are plenty of shows that are entertaining (read: distraction on steroids): full of catchy music and cuteness, but also full of flashing lights, flashing scenes, and images going a mile a minute; plus it seems like many of the characters have poor manners, exhibit really poor behaviors or engage in self-depreciating monologues.
I wonder if the bullying epidemic in our schools is in part due to television…?
Anyhoo, in our family we focus on finding shows that are fun, blatantly or quietly educational, and usually calm; my girls are naturally energetic (like most kids) so I don’t want a show to rile them up further. (I have delicate nerves. Not really, I mean, is it even possible to have delicate nerves when you have a toddler? Or two?) Yes, “Reading Rainbow” is great (plus I like it heh heh heh).
I also like Reading Rainbow because the children’s fashions are closer to how my girls dress (large collars, dresses, bows in the hair, pigtails, peter pan collars…vintage and cute)
Did you know that as an
member you have free access to loads of shows?
Shows like READING RAINBOW!!!!!
(It says $24.99, but it’s free for Prime Members, did I mention that?)
“Are you that excited about free things?” You ask.
And did you know that Reading Rainbow has an educational app and that its the #1 educational app out there at the moment? Awesome. We do restrict “screen time” in our home, but as the girls get older, I think the Reading Rainbow app would be awesome.
“But you don’t have to take my word for it!”
(dun dun dunt!)
