Ahh oil painting.
I hadn’t oil painted in the last….5 years.
Until last night.
And oil painting is something that I love to do.
It’s indescribable for me.
It’s a part of me.
It’s only when I’m oil painting that I feel…satisfied, complete, happy, content, yearning, striving.
But from what I understand, it’s not healthy to paint when you’re preggo and acrylics aren’t my thing. It’s not the same. I love the smell, the tradition, the feel, the tooth of oil painting. I love stretching my own canvas, laying down the ground, picking a subject, being inspired, I love the entire process.
But…like most moms I’ve had to make incredible personal sacrifices at times. And oil painting is one of them.
Dude, I’m serious. Oil painting is like…a part of my soul.
I’ve painted since I was…in the 6th grade? And have WANTED to paint since way before then.
When I was little, I loved going to museums, I loved art, I loved … watching Bob Ross on PBS. He was a happy spot of sunshine in my young life. I loved watching him paint, hearing the softness of his voice, the quiet padding of his brush on canvas…oh the sweet sweet calm. His “happy little trees.”
No joke, no lie, I loved Bob Ross.
And one day at our local craft store, I saw the Bob Ross painting set.

I don’t remember if it was bought for me or if I saved up money for it. But I had it and started painting. Horrible dark little paintings that were supposed to be miniature majestic landscapes like his were. But I was just so happy to be taking after Bob Ross ^_^ regardless of what I produced.
My great grandmother even took one of my dark little paintings home with her on one of her rare visits to the Midwest.
Later, when I was in the 8th grade, I worked and saved enough money to buy an easel from the local craft store. Yup, you guessed it…that’s it in the intro picture holding up my newest work…my “old faithful” easel that has seen me through middle school, high school, we had a long break when my college had a lame @ss art program, and then years later when I was accepted into a top arts school for a second BA in fine arts (call me crazy, but it was wonderful; a dream come true).
I love oil painting. It makes my soul sing through my bones.
I’m actually much better at watercolors than oil painting.
But even though I’m not a great oil painter (yet) I love it so much.
What’s something that you love to do?
Do you have something that makes your soul sing?
And can you take a little time to do that today?
((And can we just take a minute to appreciate Peaches’ hair in this video? Gorgeous. Totally just found my style for next summer <3))
p.s. If you see words, posters, or links in my post, those are things that I’ve handpicked and put in my blog especially for you. They lead to more information and if you like, you can buy what is featured; it’s usually a book, an online movie rental, or a cool product.
